Tuesday, February 21, 3:00 - 4:00 pm on your DESKTOP

Learn how high school students are taking an inquiry stance on information literacy in a participatory library culture to cultivate themselves as connected learners. We will explore how students are using cloud computing and web 2.0 tools as authoritative sources of information, for content and knowledge creation, and for information management as they construct personal learning environments.

Rudimentary RDA - available in person and online

Note: This workshop will be presented face to face at the NEFLIN Office in Orange Park AND will also be simultaneously broadcast live online for any attendees who want to participate virtually. Online attendees will hear and see exactly the same things as on-site attendees, they just won’t see the presenter. You will indicate when registering if you will attend in person or online. N.B. This is a full-day workshop (9am-4pm), with 15 min breaks in the morning and afternoon and a one-hour lunch break (approx 11:45-12:45).
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Date: Monday, December 12
Time: 9:00 am - 4:00 pm
Location: Either Live Online OR at NEFLIN, 2233 Park Avenue, Suite 402, Orange Park, FL
Don't panic. Just because we are holding this workshop, it doesn't mean RDA is actually here yet. RDA is still 'coming', maybe, probably, as far as we can tell, eventually. But enough of you have been asking for 'something about RDA' that we have decided that it is time to get you started.  So, this is a start on learning about the basics (the 'rudiments') of RDA. In the course of the workshop, we intend to answer the following questions:
  • What is RDA, who is responsible for it, and when might we implement it?
  • Why do we need RDA, and how might it help the users of our OPACs? This section will also introduce you to four other very important initialisms/acronyms: FRBR, WEMI, FISO, and FRAD
  • What is the RDA Toolkit, and how might it and other RDA inspired software enhancements make it simpler for us to describe and provide access to resources
  • What's really different about RDA?
  • While we wait for RDA, what should we do with RDA MARC records that we copy, and what should we do to make those records work ok in our OPACs
Anticipated goal: At the conclusion of this workshop, you will understand the importance of RDA and how it will change the way we catalog, and the ways our catalogs work.
eBooks Impact on the Future of Libraries
Peter Brantley (Internet Archive) made a wonderful ebook presentation Friday to TBLC’s Annual Meeting.
Peter suggests that popular publishing will evolve toward content like Push Pop Press’ Al Gore book Our Choice and that “the market for content will diminish the role and importance of books for libraries” freeing them to do more important things…
