Bridging the Gender Gap: Enticing Boys to Books, Reading and Libraries

Be able to identify various audiences for children’s and teen programs.
Be able to identify “ever cool” brands and services and relate that to marketing library programs and services.

Mark your calendars now for the April 18-20, 2012, FLA Annual Conference!

CONFERENCE HIGHLIGHTS:

· FLA President Gloria Calvin has chosen “Florida Libraries – Vibrant and Vital” as the conference theme for this year. A full slate of interesting programs will explore different aspects of that theme on such topics as discovery tools, open access, ebooks, assessment, RDA, patron driven acquisition, mobile apps, information literacy, and partnerships. Preliminary program information is coming soon!

· The 2012 FLA Annual Conference will be held over three days: Wednesday, April 18th through Friday, April 20th at the Wyndham Orlando Resort, “an oasis of quiet walkways and two-story buildings in the heart of Orlando’s International Drive.” Click here for hotel information.

· The Opening General Session (Wednesday morning) will feature Michael Porter who is the Communications Manager for Web Junction and President of Library Renewal. He will discuss his organization’s work in research, relationships and outreach to assure the future of libraries and your role as an advocate.

· The Closing General Session (Friday afternoon) will feature National Public Radio Librarian, Kee Malesky, who will inform and entertain as she talks about her very unique job.

· The Technology Petting Zoo will be back again this year and vendors will also be on hand to exhibit their latest products.

· Author events will include the Florida Book Awards and author signings.

· Popular features such as the Silent Auction, New Members Orientation, and Performers Showcase are also on the schedule.

Don't panic. Just because we are holding this workshop, it doesn't mean RDA is actually here yet. RDA is still 'coming', maybe, probably, as far as we can tell, eventually. But enough of you have been asking for 'something about RDA' that we have decided that it is time to get you started. So, this is a start on learning about the basics (the 'rudiments') of RDA. In the course of the workshop, we intend to answer the following questions:

What is RDA, who is responsible for it, and when might we implement it?
Why do we need RDA, and how might it help the users of our OPACs? This section will also introduce you to four other very important initialisms/acronyms: FRBR, WEMI, FISO, and FRAD
What is the RDA Toolkit, and how might it and other RDA inspired software enhancements make it simpler for us to describe and provide access to resources
What's really different about RDA?
While we wait for RDA, what should we do with RDA MARC records that we copy, and what should we do to make those records work ok in our OPACs

Anticipated goal: At the conclusion of this workshop, you will understand the importance of RDA and how it will change the way we catalog, and the ways our catalogs work.

This workshop is designed to demonstrate quick and easy techniques for extending shelf life on general circulating materials. Prevention is the key, but we will be addressing specific common repairs: re-inserting loose pages, broken spines, torn header caps, ripped and torn pages. Each participant will be provided with a free sample packet of materials.

Each participant is asked to bring:
• one or two paperback books, preferably new or new-like, to demonstrate covering techniques
• a hardbound book with a book jacket to demonstrate application of book jacket covers
• a stapled book or magazine
• one hardbound book that needs repair
• and a “naked” hardbound book; i.e., a hardbound book that does NOT have a book jacket cover

ACLD Awarded National Medal for Library Service

The Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) has selected the Alachua County Library District, as one of only ten libraries and museums to receive the 2011 National Medal for Museum and Library Service.

The Alachua County Library District was nominated for its successful community partnerships, customer focus, expanded services, and diverse programs and events.

“The Library District strongly supports partnerships and we are continuously looking for partnerships that will benefit our community,” said Library Director Shaney T. Livingston. Just recently, we partnered with the John A.H. Murphree Law Library Board of Trustees to transition a professional law library to our Headquarters location. This partnership provides the public expanded evening and weekend hours. We have partnerships with many agencies in the community such as: the Literacy Coalition, Early Learning Coalition, United Way, and the Alachua County School Board to name a few. I believe the library is an important pillar in the community and with the many resources we offer, it only makes sense to partner with others. Through partnerships we can offer the citizens of our community so much more.”

The Library Partnership is an excellent example of working partnerships between the Library District, the Partnership for Strong Families, the Florida Department of Children and Families, and the Casey Foundation to create under one umbrella a library plus more than 30 social services to serve the needs of this community.

This past year, another successful partnership was formed with the University of Florida’s College of Medicine and the Library District to expand access to primary health care through UF’s Mobile Outreach Clinic. The Mobile Outreach Clinic visits three library locations - Tower Road, High Springs and Headquarters. These additional locations help to expand health care services to the underserved population of Alachua County. The Mobile Outreach Clinic has been well utilized and plans are to add another day to the current schedule.

The National Medal is the nation’s highest honor for museums and libraries for extraordinary civic, educational, economic, environmental, and social contributions. Recipients must demonstrate innovative approaches to public service and community outreach.

Update from FLA

There's a lot happening with FLA, and I'd like to take the opportunity to update you on a number of FLA activities and plans.

Tomorrow (Oct. 25) the Continuing Education Committee is co-sponsoring a virtual and in-person program on "The Changing Library: Keeping up with public needs and technology with less budget and staff" along with SEFLIN and the Broward County Library Association. (Information available at http://www.flalib.org/bulletin_board_documents/doing_more_with_less.pdf)

I hope that your library will be participating in Florida Library Snapshot Day on Nov. 2. Snapshot Day is part of a national effort sponsored by the American Library Association, and it's a great way to showcase the many things happening in our libraries. If you haven't already registered, the FLA Public Relations Committee has put all of the information that you need at http://www.flalib.org/snapshot_day_nov_2011.php.

The election of officers and Board members for the coming year is currently underway. You should have received an e-mail from FLA Executive Director Faye Roberts last week with instructions for voting. Be sure to cast your vote for Vice-President/President-Elect, Treasurer, and 3 Directors before November 16.

The fall 2011 issue of Florida Libraries is on the website now. Our editor, Maria Gebhardt, has done a beautiful job with the editing and design. Earlier this year, the FLA Board voted to make the journal open access after a 2-month period in which only members could view the content. This issue has articles on some innovative activities and services offered by Florida libraries; a day in the life of libraries documented through Twitter; creating screencasting video tutorials; and a partnership between the Panama Canal Museum and the University of Florida. Be sure to take time to look at it!

Plans are well underway for the 2012 FLA Conference to be held April 18-20 at the Wyndham Resort in Orlando. The Conference Committee has reviewed program proposals and come up with a recommendation of programs that should appeal to a wide range of interests. If you didn't submit a program proposal, there will soon be an opportunity to submit a proposal for a poster session.

Library advocacy efforts are ongoing throughout the year, but they intensify during the Legislative session. This year, the Legislature convenes in January rather than its usual opening in March due to reapportionment. Library Day will take place on Feb. 1 in Tallahassee, and we hope that a lot of library supporters will come to meet with their legislators on that day.

Workshops for Friends, Foundations and Boards on tax and legal issues for nonprofits have been held in 7 locations around the state in past weeks. Dr. Rebecca Trammell, Director of the Stetson Law School Library has done a tremendous job in creating and presenting videos on these issues for the workshop series. The videos are now available on the FLA web site at http://www.flalib.org/friends_found_boards.php

FACRL, the Academic Member Group of FLA, held a very successful fall workshop in Daytona on October 21. The Leadership Development Committee sponsored a program on October 1 at the Clearwater Public Library featuring Ian Woodall speaking on "The Tao of Everest: The Gentle Art of Personal Inspiration and Practical Leadership." Earlier in the year, FLA and the Panhandle Library Access Network (PLAN) held a Mini-Conference in the Panhandle.

FLA is pleased to offer 3 scholarships to students in the graduate library degree program at FSU or USF and a scholarship to students enrolled in an accredited undergraduate or associates program in the state. As a Florida librarian who uses the Florida Electronic Library for yourself and to assist library users, we need your help! We invite you to participate in a 15 minute phone interview. We know your time is valuable, but by taking a brief moment out of your busy schedule to participate in this study, your contribution will benefit Florida librarians’ and library users’ ability to access, use, and understand the resources in the Florida Electronic Library.

This study will produce an analysis of the Florida Electronic Library, its use and users. Creating Patron Driven Acquisitions Initiatives

Interlibrary Loan - Acquisitions (Books on Demand) and Patron-Driven Acquisitions (PDA) initiatives are two increasingly prevalent methods for collaborative collection building in college and university libraries across the world. This workshop will go over the basics and various models of Books on Demand and PDAs in existence that will answer the following questions:

What are ILL - Acquisitions (Books on Demand) purchase models and how do they operate?
What are patron-driven acquisitions (PDA) models and how are academic libraries applying them to collaborate with faculty and users?

Why are Books on Demand and PDAs so popular with library administrators and librarians?
Anticipated Goal: The first half of the workshop will be focused on presenting actual models used at the University of Florida (ILL-Acquisitions Books-on-Demand; MyiLibrary Patron-Driven Acquisitions) and facilitating discussion with participants; the second half of the workshop will be devoted to working hands-on with participants in creating or revising PDA initiatives at their respective libraries. At the conclusion of this workshop, participants should better understand the mechanics of launching and managing collaborative acquisition projects.

NEFLIN Continuing Education Committee seeks new members

Do you have ideas for training or professional development that you would like to see available to NEFLIN members? NEFLIN is looking for several creative and dependable individuals who would like to contribute to the ongoing development of its Continuing Education program by serving on the Continuing Education Committee. The CE Committee is made up of library staff from NEFLIN's public, academic, special and school libraries.

The committee meets every other month. The dates and locations of the meetings will be planned by the committee at their first meeting in October. Your responsibility would be to attend meetings, give suggestions and input, make recommendations to and work closely with the CE Coordinator, and help promote NEFLIN's training and support services mission. This responsibility is articulated in the "CE Committee Charge" shown below. Your commitment would be for a two year term beginning October 1.

If you are interested, please send a brief statement to Patricia Morris, NEFLIN CE Coordinator, explaining your reasons for wanting to be on the committee. Deadline is Friday, August 19.

The NEFLIN Continuing Education Committee will work in an advisory capacity with the Continuing Education Coordinator to develop a training program to meet the needs of member libraries. The CE Committee will be actively involved in the direction of the continuing education program by providing suggestions and feedback on content for workshops, webinars, and additions to the NEFLIN Lending Library. In addition to generating ideas and feedback essential to a thriving CE program, the Committee will promote these resources to enhance the professional knowledge of fellow members.

The seventh class of the Sunshine State Library Leadership Institute graduated on July 29, 2011, during ceremonies at the R.A. Gray Building, home of the Florida Division of Library and Information Services.

The Institute is one of several strategies developed to cultivate and enhance the leadership skills of Florida’s library staff. This year-long comprehensive series of sessions focuses on developing diverse leaders to serve in administrative roles at local, regional, state and national levels, as well as re-energizing staff currently employed in the library profession.

39 participants completed this year’s ten month Institute. These library staff who represent public, academic, special and school libraries, were chosen from applicants statewide. Each participant was paired with a mentor, who offered them guidance throughout the year. The Institute has received nationwide recognition for its focus on mentoring and developing library leaders.

Leadership Institute: Call for Mentors

The Sunshine State Library Leadership Institute will begin its eighth year in October 2011. One of the nationally recognized components of the Institute is its formal, organized mentoring program. All Institute participants are required to choose a mentor whose primary responsibility over the ten month duration of the program is to assist the mentee in setting leadership goals and mastering the competencies necessary to achieve them.

If you are interested in serving as a mentor, please submit a Letter of Interest that includes the following:

1) Contact information – name, title, organization, telephone number, e-mail address

2) Brief outline of your area of expertise based on the Institute’s competencies

3) Reason(s) you would like to mentor a Sunshine State Library Leadership Institute participant

We recommend that your letter be no longer than two pages. The letter will be available for program participants to review. It should provide basic information to help them decide whether they would like to explore the opportunity of forming a mentoring relationship with you based on their professional development needs.

Florida Library Snapshot Day on Wednesday, November 2, 2011 is part of a broader effort organized by the American Library Association. Library Snapshot Day provides a way for all types of librarians across the state of Florida to show what happens in a single day in their libraries. To ensure Florida Library Snapshot Day has the greatest possible impact, we're asking academic, public, special, and private academic librarians as well as school media specialists to collect statistics, photographs, and members’ comments on November 2, 2011. How are Web 2.0 tools and social networking impacting the way that YA Lit authors, book publishers, and booksellers connect with teen readers? How can we as librarians tap into these resources to connect our teen patrons with their favorite authors, and how can we use these tools to engage in Readers’ Advisory 2.0?

This two hour live online class will introduce you to the Web 2.0 mediums and tools YA lit authors, book publishers, and booksellers are using to market their materials and engage with their teen readers. We will explore how YouTube, blogs, Twitter, Facebook, and MySpace are bringing YA authors and books right into the personal learning networks of today’s teens. We will also look at how librarians can embed and use these resources to provide Readers’ Advisory 2.0 to their teen patrons!

At the end of this class, participants will be able to:
• Identify the Web 2.0 tools and channels YA Lit authors, book publishers, and booksellers are using to reach teens

NEFLIN has two library awards that will be presented at the NEFLIN Annual Meeting on Friday, September 16, 2011.

1. Library Champion Award. This award recognizes an individual who has demonstrated exceptional support for a NEFLIN library.

2. Innovation Award. This award recognizes an innovative program or service that has demonstrated impact on the community a NEFLIN library serves.

Nominations may be made by any staff member in a NEFLIN library.

The deadline for nominations is June 30, 2011.

If your current approach to conflict is to run away as fast as you can, avoid the conflict for as long as you can or unleash your inner five-year old (did not! did too!), there is a better way. Each of us has a choice about our responses to conflict - we can use the destructive behaviors we learned on the playground and escalate conflict or we can choose positive, constructive behaviors that enhance communication and ultimately strengthen our personal and professional relationships.

This interactive workshop will introduce essential conflict management skills and give attendees practical, positive ways to respond to and manage conflict with confidence. Marci and Pam use customized and humorous audience interaction, personal stories and real-life examples to create an inspiring and memorable learning experience for attendees. Project Compass: Libraries Lead the Workforce for the 21st Century Workforce Recovery Training

What is Project Compass?

Libraries are playing a leading role in developing the workforce of the 21st century. Project Compass is a nationwide effort to support public libraries as they strive to meet the urgent and growing needs of the unemployed and underemployed.

This program will help public library staff increase their knowledge of available resources and handle the service needs of unemployed and job-seeking patrons. In an economy where more must be done with less, this program will also address how libraries can utilize existing resources and partnerships.

The goal of Project Compass is to support the workforce recovery efforts of libraries, particularly in counties with high unemployment. The program will introduce library staff to programs and services which they can deliver to job-seekers in their communities.

Project Compass is brought to Florida public libraries by the Division of Library and Information Services, in conjunction with WebJunction/OCLC, as part of a grant funded by the Institute of Museum of Library Services.

What are the program requirements?

• Participants will attend a face-to-face training session that covers job-seeker information, personal financial skills, and resources for small businesses and entrepreneurs. At the session, participants will exchange ideas, information, and resources. They will then share this information with their colleagues and library administration.

• Participants are required to take part in four evaluations: a pre-workshop assessment, follow-up assessments three weeks and then three months after the workshop, and a final evaluation upon completion of Project Compass.

• Participants will identify and implement at least one workforce recovery activity in their local communities by October 2011.• Participants must also participate in an online follow-up session in July 2011 to discuss their progress on their workforce recovery activities.

Who is the presenter?

Linda Bruno has worked extensively with library groups in the areas of personal and professional development. Linda is a member of the training team for Marion County’s Retooling and Refueling project, a monthly collaboration between the College of Central Florida and Workforce Connection. As part of the program, which was developed specifically to help the area’s unemployed, participants are encouraged to refresh their job-search skills by creating attention-getting resumes and sharpening their interviewing skills.

What’s in it for me?

Participants will understand the needs of job-seekers in their communities and how to better serve those needs. They will receive a full day of training and have the opportunity to network with colleagues and discuss workforce recovery issues. Training materials, lunch and breaks will be provided for all registered participants.

Who is eligible to attend?

All Florida library staff members are invited to participate in the program. Library staff from public libraries in counties with high unemployment will have their travel subsidized through an IMLS grant. Registration is free, but space in each location is limited. Every effort will be made to accommodate all interested participants. Participants will receive confirmation two weeks prior to the session.

Who is eligible for travel reimbursement?

Staff from libraries in the 54 counties of high unemployment (those with a 14-month unemployment average of higher than 9.1% as designated by the Project Compass data analysis) will be eligible to receive up to $175 in travel reimbursement per person. Travel reimbursement will be based on current Florida state travel policy. Reimbursement forms will be distributed during the workshops and must be returned to the Division of Library and Information Services in a timely fashion.

The following 13 counties are NOT eligible for travel reimbursement but can attend the training:
Alachua, Franklin, Holmes, Jackson, Jefferson, Lafayette, Leon, Liberty, Monroe, Okaloosa, Union, Wakulla , Walton

Project Compass is a free program. All Project Compass programs and materials are made possible by a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services, and provided by WebJunction and the State Library of North Carolina.

Advanced Book Repair - NEFLIN workshop

The Advanced Book Repair Class will build upon skills basic book repair skills. Participants will learn to:

Repair a damaged spine
Reattach a text block to its original case
Replace a missing spine on the original case and reattach

Participants should bring:

Olfa knife or scapel
Bone folder
Metal straight edge
Two glue brushes (1/2 inch and 1”)
Microspatula
Scissors
and Tweezers

Don't panic. Just because we are holding this workshop, it doesn't mean RDA is actually here yet. RDA is still 'coming', maybe, probably, as far as we can tell, eventually. But enough of you have been asking for 'something about RDA' that we have decided that it is time to get you started. So, this is a start on learning about the basics (the 'rudiments') of RDA. In the course of the workshop, we intend to answer the following questions:

· What is RDA, who is responsible for it, and when might we implement it?

· Why do we need RDA, and how might it help the users of our OPACs? This section will also introduce you to four other very important initialisms/acronyms: FRBR, WEMI, FISO, and FRAD

· What is the RDA Toolkit, and how might it and other RDA inspired software enhancements make it simpler for us to describe and provide access to resources?

· What's really different about RDA?

· While we wait for RDA, what should we do with RDA MARC records that we copy, and what should we do to make those records work ok in our OPACs?

Anticipated goal: At the conclusion of this workshop, you should understand the importance of RDA and how it will change the way we catalog, and the ways our catalogs work.

FLA Award Winners Announced

The Florida Library Association has announced its annual awards. Congratulations to the following NEFLIN members who were honored:

Librarian of the Year – Paul Clark, Clay County Public Library who, on his own time and his own initiative, advocated tirelessly for state funding for libraries during the 2010 legislative session. Known to legislators as “The Library Guy,” Clark was awarded both a New York Times “I Love My Librarian” award and the Florida Association of Counties advocacy award in 2010.

Libraries Mean Business Award – Alachua County Library District for its collaboration with the FloridaWorks One Stop Career Center to bring programs on job searching and resume writing to branch libraries.

Special Projects Award to Friends of the Columbia County Public Library for their Adult Team Spelling Bee to raise awareness and funds to support the Library’s Adult Literacy Program.

Also, two colleagues of ours were awarded Lifetime Achievement Awards. Well deserved honors go to Loretta and Richard!

Lifetime Achievement Award – Loretta Flowers, State Library and Archives of Florida for her contributions to public library development and statewide equity of access to library services.

Lifetime Achievement Award – Richard Madaus, College Center for Library Automation for his commitment to innovation and collaboration which has strengthened the educational experiences of millions of students throughout Florida.

Library staff from public libraries in counties with high unemployment will have their travel subsidized through an IMLS grant. Registration is free, but space in each location is limited. Every effort will be made to accommodate all interested participants. Participants will receive confirmation two weeks prior to the session.

Who is eligible for travel reimbursement?
Staff from libraries in the 54 counties of high unemployment (those with a 14-month unemployment average of higher than 9.1% as designated by the Project Compass data analysis) will be eligible to receive up to $175 in travel reimbursement per person. Travel reimbursement will be based on current Florida state travel policy. Reimbursement forms will be distributed during the workshops and must be returned to the Division of Library and Information Services in a timely fashion.

The following 13 counties are NOT eligible for travel reimbursement but can attend the training:
Alachua, Franklin, Holmes, Jackson, Jefferson, Lafayette, Leon, Liberty, Monroe, Okaloosa, Union, Wakulla , Walton

Project Compass is a free program. All Project Compass programs and materials are made possible by a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services, and provided by WebJunction and the State Library of North Carolina.

NEFLIN Adds Three New Counties

The members of the Central Florida Library Cooperative (CFLC) met this past December and voted to dissolve their cooperative. Subsequently, the State Library assigned three counties to NEFLIN (Brevard, Seminole and Volusia) and the remaining ones to TBLC. A revised map showing the five currently operating MLCs is on the left.

The NEFLIN Board spent time at their past three meetings discussing this issue and then voted at their March meeting to offer membership to libraries in these three counties.

This is the current map with the 23 counties that NEFLIN now serves.

We are excited about the opportunity to provide service to libraries in these three counties. You will meet their staff at NEFLIN workshops and other events. Make them feel welcome!
(You will find that these folks look, act, and sound just like us.)

For new members...we have scheduled a series of webinars to further explain how to get the most out of your membership in NEFLIN. Think of these as attending a virtual open house. We have scheduled a number of these to allow the most staff to attend.

Do yourself a favor and download Firefox 4 or Chrome 10 today. Both browsers are major improvements over previous versions. (I can't speak to Internet Explorer 9 since it doesn't work with Windows XP.)

I can't tell you how much better Firefox 4 is than version 3. The reason that I began using Google's Chrome browser was that Firefox got so sluggish. It seemed to take longer and longer just to load. However, Firefox is back with speed and features that make it again my browser of choice.

Virtual Job Shadowing

Florida Census Data Released

Highlights: Between 2000 and 2010, Florida's population grew by more than 2.8 million people (from 16 million to 18.8 million), and Florida will get two more seats in Congress for a total of 27 representatives.

I found the Florida Sun-Sentinel's database easier to use than the official census website to look at breakdowns by population, race, housing, etc.

What’s going on with Cataloging??? Over ten years after the publication of FRBR and two years after the final draft of RDA, we come to a decision point. The questions that are posed are not just about the adoption of new cataloging rules, but of possible new directions for library data. The report on the Future of Bibliographic Control advised us to increase sharing -- between libraries and with non-library communities -- and to move our data from silo'd databases to an open web platform. We will review steps that are being taken to at least experiment with those recommendations: the definition of library terms in a format compatible with the Semantic Web; national and international efforts to create linkable library data for web services; and results from two significant efforts: the World Wide Web Consortium's Incubator Group on Linked Library Data and the U.S. National Libraries test of RDA.

FLA Survey on Digital Skills

The ability to use technology to connect, to research, even to fill out simple and vital forms is no longer optional. Yet many of our library customers do not have these basic skills and they look to librarians for direction and training. This study will look at perspectives from both public and academic libraries to provide an awareness of the varied landscape of digital training skills and needs among Florida residents and clarify the state of technology training for librarians throughout Florida.

By taking part in this study, you will help to provide a more accurate picture of what is needed to make Florida¹s residents successful netizens. The survey should take less than 20 minutes of your time. Results will be shared at the Florida Library Association¹s Annual Conference on May 6, 2011.

A 10 Step Approach to Service Continuity Planning

This three-hour course focuses training on the 10-step approach to service continuity planning and two practice exercises on developing a customized emergency preparedness risk assessment and designing and implementing a disaster-related table-top exercise.

Personnel affiliated with the national NN/LM National Emergency Preparedness & Response Initiative at the University of Virginia originally developed the course. The NN/LM SE/A Regional Emergency Preparedness representative adapted it for the Southeastern Atlantic area, particularly coastal states, and will teach the session with interactive delivery formats being a combination of lecture, electronic presentation, individual exercises and class participation.

Main Results: To make librarians aware and empowered of three things:

How to plan to get help with providing core services during a disaster and to quickly recover all services to normal operations, afterwards
How to be prepared in the event of a disaster
How to be prepared in their community and at home

At the conclusion of the program, each attendee should:

Know how to perform a library and archives risk assessment
Appreciate the value of an immediate response
Understand the importance of service continuity during a disaster
Protect highly valued materials
Know how to obtain outside help and available resources
Be prepared at home
Be able to design a disaster-related table top exercise

Participants can receive 3 hours of MLA credit.
