New Personal Development Classes at JPL - July 10

Andrea Giggetts of Giggetts and Associates will lead two half day workshops at the Jacksonville Main Library, Multipurpose Room 1, on Tuesday, July 10.  Register to attend one or both workshops. These classes are free and open to staff in Florida Libraries.

What Got You Here Won’t Get You There - Discovering the Workplace Habits You Need to Break!
9:00 am - 12:00 noon
What’s holding you back? You are working hard but there is something standing between you and the next level of achievement. That something may just be one of your own annoying habits or perhaps a behavior you barely even recognize. Andrea Giggetts will outline the habits and behaviors found in the work environment and provide a systematic approach to helping you achieve a positive change. Objective: Our goal is to assist you in performing at the next level and to offer a continuous improvement plan to increase their effectiveness.

Attitudes Toward Differences
1:00 - 4:00 pm
Today, we find ourselves in more diverse families, communities, and workplaces. Our challenge is to look for ways we can connect with people who may have very different experiences from our own. Sometimes getting the discussion started is the most difficult part. Objective: You’ll develop skills needed to successfully build connections with others so that you can communicate more effectively, resolve conflict, and work more productively. You’ll learn how to deal with diversity issues by building relationships using the skills of empathy, inquiry, and dialogue but in a non-judging, non-blaming manner. Ultimately, participants are led to new insights, understanding, and new behaviors, thereby seeing the world in new ways. In addition, this seminar gives attendees an opportunity to share the insights they have gained and, in small group settings, make statements about what they are going to do differently as a result of their new insights. Finally, attendees will be inspired to actively and openly discuss issues and to take responsibility for making a diverse workforce an asset.

NEFLIN's Partnership with Amazon

As a reminder, visit http://www.neflin.org/amazon first before making purchases on Amazon. NEFLIN will then receive a portion of any purchases in return. (All purchases are anonymous so we receive no identifying information on any items.)

What is in it for you?

In the past year, this program has allowed NEFLIN to add books and DVDs to our Lending Library and gaming items to our Equipment Loan Program.

Remind your friends, wake your neighbors...you don't have to be a NEFLIN member to participate. Anyone who visits http://www.neflin.org/amazon and then makes a purchase on Amazon will provide the credit to NEFLIN. We appreciate your support of NEFLIN!

How to participate in e-book study

Pew Internet received a $1.4 million grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to study the role of libraries in users’ lives and in their communities. So far, we’ve released reports chronicling the adoption of e-readers and tablet computers and the rise of e-reading — but we’re just getting started.

How you can participate
While our phone surveys are random to ensure statistical accuracy, we are actively looking for e-book borrowers to volunteer to take our online surveys. So if you ever check out or download e-books from a public library — or if you’re a librarian at a library that has e-books available for check-out — please sign up.
Not an e-book borrower? We’d still love to hear from you. Some of our future online surveys will cover a lot of ground, so take a look to see which groups apply to you. Once you sign up (and click on the confirmation link that we send you), you’ll be notified whenever relevant online surveys are in the field.

E-book Price Fixing

The Justice Department is about to sue Apple and five (of the Big Six) publishers for conspiring to raise the price of e-books. The warning is a game-changer in the government’s long-running anti-trust investigation.

FLA's Annual "Tweet About Your Work" Day

Tweet about your library work!  The Florida Library Association (FLA) would like to invite librarians in all types of jobs to be part of our Virtual Job Shadowing Project (library school students who are currently employed in libraries can also participate). Choose a day between April 2 and April 14th to tweet your daily activities using the hashtag #libjobshadowFL.  Inform potential (and current) librarians about your workday.  Users can also visit the FLA Twitter page at http://www.twitter.com/libjobshadowFL.

Librarians have embraced the changes brought about by the internet age and we are creating new roles to become the information guides of this new century.  Sharing our daily activities will help to illuminate the depth and breadth of our profession.  We want to hear from all types of librarians, whether new or time-tested, about the roles you are creating every day.

For a list of our tweeters and the days they will participate, stop by the Virtual Job Shadowing Project Facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/FLAVirtualJobShadowing. The FLA Virtual Job Shadowing Project is coordinated by the Florida Library Association Library Personnel Recruitment Committee.  To volunteer to tweet about your workday, please contact Susan L. Smith via email: ssmith1@hodges.edu or phone (239) 598-6134.

Bridging the Gender Gap: Enticing Boys to Books, Reading and Libraries
    Thursday, March 29, 9:00 am - 4:00 pm
Deltona Regional Library, 2150 Eustace Avenue, Deltona, FL 32725

As much as parents and caregivers, teachers, and librarians try, it is a reality that boys are much less likely to become independent readers than are girls.  Find out what are the influences that can help turn boys into lifelong readers.  Find out what topics, types of books -- including informational books and movable books – and titles will work to make boys into readers.  Find out about the “Guys Read” movement.  Participants will learn about selection criteria so that they can enhance their library collections to attract boys. This interactive full day workshop will help school and public librarians understand and meet the needs of boys, birth through 7th grade.  Participants are encouraged to bring 3 books that they have found successful in attracting boys to reading and libraries.

Marketing for Youth Services: Can It Be Magic?
    Friday, March 30, 9:00 am - 4:00 pm
Brevard Central Library, 308 Forrest Avenue, Cocoa, FL 32922

Attracting new users to the library can be difficult.  It is getting even more difficult in this media saturated world.  The crux of marketing is to find out your customer’s real needs and desires and then to create and sell a product or service that fulfills those needs and desires.  By the end of this highly interactive workshop, participants will:
    • Be able to list at least 5 influences in children’s and teens lives that affect their choices in what they do with their leisure time.
    • Be able to identify various audiences for children’s and teen programs.
    • Be able to identify “ever cool” brands and services and relate that to marketing library programs and services.
    • Have the chance to design at least one marketing piece to promote the youth program.
    • Participants are encouraged to bring some marketing pieces that they have used successfully to promote their programs and services.

    NEFLIN Members: Certificates and Evaluations

    NEFLIN Members,

After attending a NEFLIN workshop you no longer have to e-mail certificate@neflin.org to request a certificate. Every registered attendee will automatically receive an e-mail with links to a certificate of attendance and online evaluation.

This is one of the features recently added to Acteva, NEFLIN's training management system.

We believe this will provide better service for those who need a certificate of attendance.

The only exception is when a group of people view a webinar together. Those in the group who did not register will still need to send an e-mail to certificate@neflin.org to request a certificate.

Please contact me if you have any questions.
