This seminar will include an introduction to a variety of websites as well as other sources of information. Find out more about legal aid resources in various regions of the state and how to find local resources for your patrons. These seminars will help build relationships that will improve communication between Florida public libraries and the Florida self-help legal aid community.

Together we will push the boundaries and pull the horizons to invent the future of mobile libraries and establish best practices for continuing success. Joe and Chad will lend their expertise to answer questions of what’s next in order to provide a clearer path to accomplishing the goal of putting your library conveniently in your user’s pocket. Presenters: Joe Murphy of the Yale Science Libraries and author of the popular Twitter account libraryfuture is a leading innovator at the forefront of designing strategies for mobilizing library services. Joe received the Library Journal ‘Movers & Shakers’ award in 2009 & earned a MLIS from the University of Hawaii in 2006.Chad Mairn is an Information Services Librarian at St. Petersburg College and is also an adjunct instructor who teaches, in both online and face-to-face formats, a variety of computer and information literacy courses. • Meta Social: Online Interactions (& How to Make them Rock)
Online is social and mobile these days – do you know what’s out there, and how to make it work for your library? This presentation will introduce you to the different types of social interactions available on today’s web. More importantly, you’ll leave knowing how to improve each type of social interaction, and how to make it ROCK for your library. The reading experience is getting better with the latest generation of digital reading hardware and software. In this talk, we’ll take an in-depth look at the user experience on a variety of devices and software, such as Amazon Kindle, Apple iPad and iPhone, Stanza, Adobe Digital Editions, and newer software, such as Blio and Copia. What works well, what doesn’t, and what do users prefer for different kinds of reading situations? How is the definition of an "ebook" changing and how are publishers and authors responding to the changing landscape? What does this mean for the purchasing decisions of libraries? Librarians have an opportunity to become experts on reading apps and devices, recommending the best options for our users and advocating with publishers to move in directions that will best serve our readers. Come see examples of what libraries are doing in this area and get inspired with ideas for how we can influence the future of e-reading. Virtual Training Opportunities in June and July

Supervisory Skills: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly...Dealing with Difficult Behaviors and the Conflict They Sometimes Cause: LIVE ONLINE
Wednesday, June 30, 2:00 - 4:00 pm

In this session, we will study four of the behaviors we all try to avoid – tanks, snipers, whiners, and grenades. We’ll find out why they do what they do and how we should – or shouldn’t – react to them. How can we communicate with them more effectively? And in case conflict creeps onto the scene, we will learn how to be an example to others, as well as specific tips on how to help others deal with conflict. These topics aren’t what we think of as “fun topics” – but if we handle them well, our workplace will be more fun. Don’t miss this opportunity to learn how to deal with some of the “negatives” more effectively!

Virtual Trainer: Linda Bruno, Library Consultant

Monday, July 12, 2:00 - 3:30 pm

Often school media specialists and their libraries are the most vulnerable when school budgets get slashed. What can you do? First, you must be able to measure the value of your library and second, to be able to communicate that value and demonstrate your library's impact on the school and community. This webinar, developed in New Jersey and using WebJunction "Demonstrating Impact" documents, utilizes the “Valuing Libraries Toolkit” at http://www.hrlc.org/funding/valuinglibs.htm. It's a simple method to quickly calculate a library's return on investment and demonstrate its value.

After the webinar, participants will be able to:
  • Describe what is valuable to customers, funders and stakeholders
  • Execute a seven part strategic process
  • Identify and quantify the library’s value
Virtual Trainer: Joanne Roukens, Highlands Regional Library Cooperative, Denville, NJ

Thursday, July 15, 10:00 am - 12:00 noon

In this two hour online class, students will explore 20 of the best consumer action/ protection/help resources that librarians use to find answers to questions like “I think my car has been recalled -- where do I find information on how to get repairs?” and “I’m considering a new dishwasher -- where can I find reviews and information on the most energy efficient models?” Students will then have the opportunity to explore consumer reference resources further in an after-class exercise. By the end of this class students will be able to:
  • Identify the best consumer reference tools online
  • Use consumer reference resources to answer specific questions
  • Assist patrons with consumer assistance reference questions more effectively
Virtual Trainer: Russell Palmer, Lyrasis

Monday, July 26, 2:00 - 4:00 pm

Ah, the incredible power of praise – when to give it, how to give it, and to whom. You’ll receive 8 “praise phrases” that show people you’ve noticed and appreciate who they are. We’ll discuss why singing the praises of your employees helps create that motivating environment we all like to work in. And I know you! You’re thinking, “But I have someone whose praises don’t warrant singing.” Ah, well...we’ll see about that! We will discuss coaching and counseling before the need for a reprimand arises. You’ll know when to use which technique, why it’s important to consider the differences, and why supervisors tend to avoid these vital areas of effective management. You’ll also be given tools that will help you deal with the dreaded case of the necessary reprimand – and you’ll leave the workshop feeling more confident in your ability to handle it well. It’s an area most of us would rather forget – but as supervisors, it’s not likely we’ll get off scot-free. Why not feel in control when handling these necessary parts of your job? This workshop will help you do just that.

Virtual Trainer: Linda Bruno, Library Consultant

Tuesday, July 27, 10:00 am - 12:00 noon

Travel web pages are now widespread, but which travel resources will best point your library users in the right direction as they plan personal and business travel? In this two-hour online class, students will explore 20 of the best travel resources librarians (and Lyrasis traveling trainers!) use to answer questions like, “this hotel is really reasonable -- should I stay here?” and “I’m staying overnight in a really small town -- is there a gem of a local restaurant here?” Students will then have the opportunity to explore travel reference resources further in an after-class exercise.
