Google Launches eBookstore

Google has launched their own ebook store, in direct competition with Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and other commercial ebook stores. There are a number of really interesting pieces to the books in the Google Book experience, such as:
For me, this is a much more interesting eBook experience than the B&N store…the only thing that has parity with this is Amazon’s Kindle. With the standardization on Adobe DRM ePub files, Google is using most common combination of filetype and protection…and books that are not currently under copyright are provided DRM free. As a matter of fact, since the DRM decision is made by the publisher, if the publisher decides to release the ebook without DRM entirely, they can do that. That’s huge moving forward as the eBook market matures.

Consumers now have yet another option in the eBook marketplace, and libraries have yet another competitor in the hearts and minds of patrons. Hopefully we can find ways to make it work for us, and not against us.

Too cool for words. Watch this video if you haven’t seen the Kinect in action before.

Free MARC records for Gutenberg Titles

The Colorado Library Consortium created a project to clean up the most popular MARC records from Project Gutenberg called eDiscover the Classics.  We identified the top 500 or so downloads and cleaned up those records and made them available to other libraries.   We launched the website a few weeks at: http://www.clicweb.org/e_discover/e_discoverhome.html

Since that time the records have been further enhancements by Douglas County Libraries and University of Denver.  If you have already downloaded the MARC records we encourage you to get the new set of records and reload them into your catalog.  Here is a link explaining our clean-up efforts.

Please consider these MARC records a gift to the library community!  The more patrons think of libraries as a source for content for their Kindles, Nooks, IPads, MP3 players, etc - the better!

Integrating Social Media and Mobile Technologies to Help Enhance Library Services - January 27

Part one of this hands-on workshop covers Social Media. Social Media is not new; however, it is literally everywhere today and it is connecting people, places, things, and ideas. And libraries, for centuries, have acted as conduits to help their communities obtain high-quality information while providing a social space for their users to consume, repurpose, and share content. In this interactive session learn how to enhance library resources and services that exist both online and in physical library spaces by using a variety of social media tools including blogging, microblogging, social networking, gaming, and other social media tools.

Part two covers mobile technologies. Mobile devices certainly are evolving beyond simple cell phones and are becoming connections to a world of information. Now that information is literally available at everyone’s fingertips, your library’s resources and services could also be in your users‟ pockets at their point of need. In this session learn, why libraries should have a mobile presence, how to use Google Analytics to decide what to include on your mobile web page, to code or not to code using WYSIWYG editors and other mobile tools, to create links to Google mobile maps, ways to generate and use QR codes to help promote your mobile presence, and solutions to common challenges in mobile development. Leave this workshop with powerful tools that you can use today to help connect people, places, things, and ideas.
